While moving to a new home in another state can be an exciting change, it can also be a bit overwhelming. Not only are there many logistics to deal with, but also you will be saying goodbye to friends, a community, and a house you’ve known for so long. To make this prospect easier and to get in some last-minute bonding time with loved ones, the guide below offers tips for preparing for your trip.

Do:

Make it a joint effort.

Homeowners are always amazed to discover how many belongings they’ve accumulated over the years. Even after donating some of these items, packing up the rest can quickly become tiring. However, it becomes easier when you don’t have to do it alone. For example, if you have preteen or teen children, make them responsible for boxing up their own rooms. You can also ask extended family or friends to help. They’ll love the chance to share a pizza and chat before you leave for your new home—and so will you.

Box items by room & label them thoroughly.

new homeThere are many ways to organize boxes. However, when we set up a new house, we tend to do it room by room—with our first focuses being the bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom. Therefore, it makes the most sense to group items that way. In addition, make sure to label each box with an extensive list of its contents. This way, you don’t have to open them all in search of a spatula or pillow.

Don’t:

Neglect to pack a moving day bag.

While most of your items will go in boxes in the moving truck, pack a small suitcase or duffel bag for each member of your family. This should contain a few changes of clothes, hygiene products, some entertainment items, and anything else you might use during your road trip and your first night in the new home. If you have a pet, pack one for them as well, containing food, water bottles and a bowl, some toys, and any calming medication recommended by their vet.

Forget utilities.

After spending several days driving, you turn on the light switch in your new home only to realize the power isn’t on. To avoid this scenario, make sure to coordinate with local utility companies to have the electricity, water, gas, and internet set up for your arrival or as shortly afterward as possible.
