A crate is a dog’s home within your home. Puppies may have a hard time understanding this, and like any new dwelling, they need time to get accustomed to it before claiming it as their space. With proper instruction and care, however, your puppy can learn to love their crate. Below are a few tips to guide you through the ins and outs of crate training.

How to Successfully Crate Train Your Puppy

1. Make It Welcoming

Pique your puppy’s interest in their crate by creating a welcoming environment. Fill the space with comfortable, familiar items for them to enjoy, such as their favorite blankets and chew toys. When it comes time to crate your pooch, drop treats near it or in front of the door to entice them in. They’ll learn to associate the crate with these positives, making it easier for them to adjust to their new kennel.

2. Minimize Crate Times

Dogs are active animals that need space to release their energy—especially puppies. Too much time cooped up impedes this instinct, which causes them to dread the kennel. Keep your puppy in the crate for no more than 10-minute increments. Sit near the crate, leave the room, and return during this time until they aren’t restless about your absence. Work up to longer increments as they get older.

3. Train While You’re Home

puppiesIf you only crate your pooch when you leave the house, they’ll associate it with isolation, so try training them while you’re home. As advised above, start by staying close to them while they’re in the crate and leaving periodically. This will help prevent separation anxiety and your puppy’s fear of entering the kennel.

4. Bring Them Outside Afterwards

After spending time in the crate, take your pooch out to relieve themselves. Puppies have less control over their bathroom habits, so they could have accidents inside the crate, which will teach them to go in the crate rather than outside of it.

5. Don’t Use It as Punishment

Your puppy’s kennel should never be used as punishment. If you put them inside after they’ve misbehaved, they’ll associate the space with negative feelings, which will make it difficult to get them inside when you need it. Make it a space where they can rest, relax, and sleep.
