Fire extinguishers are a common sight on properties since they are among the first line of defense against fires. Despite their ubiquity, only a few people know how to operate them properly. In case of emergency, time is of the essence. The longer it takes to put out a fire, the more damaging it can become. To take control of the situation, learn the four-step PASS, or pull, aim, squeeze, and sweep, technique below.

4-Step Guide to Using a Fire Extinguisher

1. Pull the Pin

Before operating a fire extinguisher, make sure that your back is towards the nearest safe exit. This will allow you to leave quickly during an emergency. Hold the extinguisher and pull the pin, which is inserted into the handle to prevent accidental discharge. At the end of the pin is a ring, and you need to grab to remove it. For non-residential or high-density areas, fire extinguishers may also have a zip or beaded tie attached to the pin as a tamper indicator.

2. Aim at the Base of the Fire

Grab the hose or nozzle and aim it towards the base of the fire, which is the fuel source. Focus on putting that out first instead of directing the fire extinguisher at the flames.  If you’re using a carbon dioxide extinguisher, refrain from holding the plastic horn as it gets extremely cold. With your other hand, hold the lower handle lever for a stronger grip.

3. Squeeze the Lever

Fire extinguishersRelease the extinguishing agent by squeezing the levers together. Apply pressure in a controlled manner to discharge the content while keeping your aim towards the base. Make sure you’re standing at least six to eight feet away from the fire. As you douse, move closer when the flames are smaller.

4. Sweep

While discharging, slowly sweep the hose or nozzle from side to side at the base. Refrain from leaving any glowing embers as these can reignite and start another fire. Continue dousing the flames and repeat the entire process until the embers are out. Be on guard for hot spots or hidden fires before leaving the establishment. If the fire is too large to put out with your extinguisher, call the fire department right away.
