Drinking water every day helps maintain your oral health. It rinses away food particles and bacteria that can contribute to decay. Dentists also like to remind patients that it serves as an alternative to sugar-laden beverages like sports drinks and soda. Unfortunately, it can be hard to get kids to drink enough water if they've become accustomed to beverages like chocolate milk and fruit juice. If your children “hate” water, here are a few strategies that may help.

3 Tips for Encouraging Your Kids to Drink Water

1. Get Everyone Personalized Bottles

It’s worth investing in fun cups and bottles if it means everyone in the family will drink more water. If your kids have favorite cartoon characters, for example, look for containers that feature them. However, make sure to tell your children that the bottles are only meant for water. Crazy straws can also make sipping a lot more appealing.

2. Bring Water Wherever You Go

dentistOnce everyone has their own bottle, make sure they actually use them. For example, fill them before every outing and bring them with you, so no one ever goes thirsty. It’s also wise to make water more accessible at home. If you have the space, consider getting a water cooler. Otherwise, keep a jug of water on one of the lower shelves in the fridge so everyone can reach it.

3. Add Some Flavoring

As a parent, you have to pick your battles. If your kids refuse to drink plain water, for example, there's nothing wrong with flavoring it for them. Your dentist can recommend enamel-friendly ways to make water a little more palatable, like infusing it with fresh fruit.
