Your car requires routine maintenance to operate at peak performance. Oil changes are one of the most important tasks that every driver should include on their auto care checklist; however, many motorists neglect it. Below are a few of the tell-tale signs that indicate your vehicle needs an oil change.

How to Tell When You Need an Oil Change

1. Loud Noises

oil changeIf you hear loud noises coming from the front of your vehicle when idling or starting the engine, this could indicate an issue with oil levels. The mechanical components in the engine require lubrication or they will rub against each other creating friction and loud noises, such as knocking or screeching.

2. Dashboard Light

For older vehicles, the check engine light may illuminate once you’ve passed the number of miles for the manufacturer’s recommended oil change. However, it could also mean a loose gas cap, which is why you can perform a dip test to confirm. If you are not comfortable with this, you can visit an auto service center so that a professional can do the testing for you. Also, newer vehicles have oil report lights that will turn on to alert you to a needed oil change.

3. Dark Oil

As a rule of thumb, motorists should check their oil at least once every 3,000 miles or every couple of months. To perform the dipstick test to check the color of the oil, remove the stick from the oil reservoir. Wipe it off, stick it back in, and then remove it to check the level and color of the oil. Dark oil means its dirty and in need of a change. If it’s below the line, you are low on oil and will need more oil. Therefore, you can change it then.
