Tooth decay is a common problem that can lead to serious oral hygiene issues. Broken, discolored, or deteriorated teeth need heavy care to prevent them from getting worse. Dental crowns are one of many options for repairing teeth and regaining a natural smile. Here’s what you should know if you’re considering them.

What They Are

A dental crown is a type of covering or “cap” that protects damaged, decayed, or discolored teeth. They provide a natural look and feel while restoring strength and size to your tooth. Often, crowns are made with metal, porcelain, ceramic, or resin.

Who Should Get Them

Adults or adolescents with permanent teeth are the best candidates for dental crowns. Anyone who has adverse reactions to general anesthesia or certain types of metals should consult with their dentist about their options for decayed or fractured teeth. Crowns are not recommended for children with baby teeth, as these coverings are meant to be permanent. Crowns can cause painful complications to growing mouths.

What to Expect During the Procedure

dental crownCrowns are fitted over the course of two appointments. The first appointment is to take a size measurement and bite profile for the crown. These specs are then sent to a lab to be crafted. In the second appointment, your dentist will file the size and shape of your tooth to fit underneath the crown. They will dry the tooth and cement the crown in place. After a few minutes, your bite will be tested and adjustments will be made to ensure the right fit.

How to Provide Aftercare

After receiving a crown, you should continue with your regular oral care regimen. This includes brushing and flossing twice a day. You should take caution when flossing the first few times to ensure you don’t accidentally loosen or remove your dental crowns. Eat soft foods at first and gradually move on to solids as you heal. Avoid foods like chewy or hard candy, as they can deteriorate or chip your crown.
