Before your air conditioning unit breaks down, there will be warning signs that something is wrong. If you schedule AC repair while the problem is still manageable, you won’t be left waiting in the heat for your HVAC technician. If you begin to notice any of the following signs, call your air conditioning company and schedule maintenance as soon as possible.

When to Schedule Air Conditioning Repairs

1. Your House Is Too Warm

AC RepairA standard indicator of a refrigerant leak is that your air conditioner begins to blow warm air. If you start to notice that air is not circulating at all, there may be an issue with the fan, motor, or other controls and electronic components. While these issues can easily be fixed with professional AC repair, the air conditioner may be functioning at full capacity, but your house is still warm. If this is the case, consult with a technician and decide if your current unit needs to be upgraded to one that is powerful enough to cool your entire house.

2. Your Unit Makes Unusual Sounds

All AC units will make humming noises when they are running efficiently, but a damaged component can change the way it sounds. You may begin to hear shaking or rattling due to loose parts or an issue with the fan, but a unit under strain can also hum louder than usual because it has to work harder to cool your home. If you notice that the air conditioner is turning on and off frequently, this may indicate an issue with the control panel or thermostat.

3. You Notice Water or Ice

Since your AC unit is a naturally cold surface, water condenses on the refrigerator coil and is collected in the unit's drip pan to be drained. However, if you begin to notice water coming from your air conditioner, there may be damage to the drip pan or the line that drains the pan may be clogged. Excess water can also come from ice that builds up inside the unit due to low refrigerant. If the ice begins to accumulate and then melt, it can overflow the drip pan and start to rust and corrode components inside and outside the unit. If water is flowing or pooling around your air conditioner, contact a professional and inquire about AC repair.
