Storage units provide homeowners with a safe location to store their possessions. Whether you’re putting your items away for an extended period of time or just a couple of weeks, however, it’s important to make sure that they remain safe as long as they’re stored. Climate-controlled storage units are designed to accommodate the needs of items that might be susceptible to damage if humidity levels aren’t regulated. Here are three to keep in mind.

Which Items Require Climate-Controlled Storage?

1. Wooden Furniture

Wood is vulnerable to damage if it’s exposed to frequent moisture. When there’s too much humidity in the air, the wood softens. This can cause it to develop cracks, warp and lose its shape, or even rot if it’s left inside the storage space for lengthy periods. Be mindful of any furnishings with wooden parts, such as dressers, bed frames, tables, and nightstands. The limited humidity levels of climate-controlled storage spaces will help protect the material from damage. Disassemble as many parts as possible before cleaning and shrink wrapping your furniture for storage.

2. Musical Instruments

When it’s moist inside, the glue eventually loses its grip. Guitar strings can develop rust and eventually snap when they lose their integrity. Mold and mildew can even form on or inside brass instruments in very warm, wet spaces where moisture is out of control. Wrapping each instrument and putting it on a wooden pallet is the safest way to care for them.

3. Artwork

Extreme temperatures can damage artwork. Humidity can crack paint finishes, deteriorate laminated surfaces, and warp other materials. Artwork made with paper may begin to yellow prematurely, and glass could become cloudy and lose its luster. Colors could also fade. Mold and mildew could also form. Placing any type of valuable art in climate-controlled storage will protect it from the ravages of inclement conditions. For safety, wrap framed pieces in storage blankets and seal them with packing tape. Use bubble wrap to secure sculptures and other large pieces.
