As you make big plans to move from a neighboring island to Oahu, you may be so busy packing up other rooms that you don’t give as much thought to the food in the kitchen. Eventually, you’ll need to remove the items residing in your fridge and pantry, including the perishables. Here’s how to handle your food before the moving company arrives.

How to Pack Food for a Move

1. Determine What to Take

movingSince you can only pack non-perishable items, purge the pantry to determine what to keep and what to toss. Throw away anything that’s leaking, damaged, or past its expiration date. If you have usable items that you don’t want to take with you, consider donating them to a food bank.

2. Pack Unopened Items

Pack sealed, unopened items to prevents spills while moving and loading the boxes. Avoid using large boxes as these are easy to overfill and may become too heavy, crushing other items during the move. Use small and medium sizes instead. Fill the medium boxes with lighter snacks, and use the smaller ones for canned goods and bottles. When possible, place liquid items in sealable plastic bags to prevent potential leaks from damaging other goods.

3. Create Detailed Labels

Instead of simply writing “food” on the box, make an informative list of what’s inside. For example, label the box with the contents, like “canned veggies and meats,” so that you can quickly find what you need. As you settle into the new home, an efficient labeling system will prevent you from opening several boxes to find the food you want.
