Most employers will supply a list of electrical tools required for their jobs, but an apprentice electrician must prepare for the unexpected. In the electrical trade, a person’s tools are their livelihood. Yours should be of high quality, but you don’t have to spend a fortune on every piece. As technology changes, so will the electrician’s tool belt, but here are a few pieces that won’t go out of style.

Required Electrical Tools for Any Job

1. Pliers

Lineman’s pliers, affectionately known as the electrician’s hammer, are the default tools used most often in electrical work. Excellent for twisting solid wires and cutting small-gauge steel, a heavy-duty set can last an entire career. Crimping pliers are used to install butt splices, and needle-nose pliers are perfect for gripping components in small, tight places. Look at inexpensive brands for both of these tools, but ensure they’re sturdy. Always opt for insulated versions to protect against electric shock.

2. Cutters

Side cutters and cable cutters are staples of an electrical toolkit. Cable cutters are more powerful than pliers but should only be used for copper and aluminum wiring. Side cutters are meant for small-gauge wires and can reach into tighter places.

Electrical Tools3. Wire Strippers

This standard electrical tool is used almost as frequently as lineman’s pliers and side cutters. In short, they strip insulation from wiring. An inexpensive set is fine to start with, but the constant grinding of metal wiring on metal strippers enlarges the holes over time, diminishing the gauge accuracy. More expensive sets are more accurate for longer, but many tend to break quicker. Try different brands throughout your career to find which works for you.
