Thanks to modern technology, missing or severely decayed teeth can be replaced with permanent, natural-looking implants. Here’s what dentists want you to know about dental implants to help you make an informed decision.

What You Should Know About Dental Implants

When are dental implants necessary?

If you have a missing tooth or teeth or have decayed teeth that will need to be removed, an implant may be right for you. Implants are a permanent alternative to dentures and bridges; you should discuss with your dentist which option is best for your teeth and gums.

What are the different types of dental implants?

There are two main types of dental implants. The first is endosteal and is the most common. An anchor screw or blade is inserted into the jaw bone and left for three to six months, over which time the titanium adheres to the bone; an artificial tooth is then added to the post. If the bone is weak, or there isn’t a lot of jaw bone left, you may need subperiosteal implants. Instead of anchoring into the bone, a titanium frame is fitted over it, underneath the gums. Like endosteal, subperiosteal implants need a few months to solidify in place.

What happens during the procedure?

dentistDuring the implant process, the area of your mouth where the implant will be placed is numbed. Your dentist will cut a flap of gums to reveal the bone, after which they will drill a hole into the jaw bone large enough for the anchor. After the screw is secured, your dentist will cover it with a cap or veneer to protect it. After three to six months, your new tooth will be placed onto the anchor.

What does recovery look like?

Like other dental procedures such as extractions, dental implants take some time for a full recovery. Generally, you can go back to work and normal activities after a couple of days. Eat soft foods for the first week before gradually moving to harder foods. Be careful not to chew at the implant site until swelling and pain have gone down, and be cautious when drinking or swishing liquids for the first week.
