Family barbecues are one of the best parts of summer, but if you don’t use grills safely, it could mean disaster. Use the tips below to avoid needing emergency restoration services this summer.

Do:

Set up your grill outside and away from structures.

Restoration ServicesWhen setting up a grill, choose an area away from your house, carport, garage, patio, and any overhanging tree branches. In general, keep the grill at least 10 feet away from flammable materials to avoid fire or smoke damage and the need for restoration service.

Keep a fire extinguisher close.

Keep water or a fire extinguisher within arm’s reach of the grill so you have something to put out an accidental fire. It doesn’t take long for a fire to catch and spread. Educate yourself on how to use the extinguisher beforehand.

Don’t:

Decorate your grill or the area around it.

Decorating for a family picnic or gathering is one way to get into the spirit of the party, but refrain from sprucing up your grill. Hanging baskets, pillows, umbrellas, flags, and other decor items will act as fuel for a fire.

Turn on the gas if the lid is closed.

If you’re using a gas grill, never turn it on while the lid is closed since the gas will build up inside. When you open the grill and light it, the fire could explode in your face. Always open your grill first, then turn it on and ignite it.
