Your body will go through significant changes while pregnant, and almost every part will be affected—including your teeth. If you stick to the following oral hygiene guidelines while pregnant, you’ll keep your mouth healthy and enjoy a radiant smile after delivery.

Do:

Tell your dentist you’re pregnant.

oral hygieneLet your dentist know right away when you’re pregnant. They’ll have valuable advice on dental care, including how to keep side effects like morning sickness or food cravings from harming your teeth.

Use FDA-approved products.

The Food and Drug Administration carefully monitors ingredients in oral hygiene products, so follow their recommendations. Use a quality toothpaste that doesn’t include any harmful chemicals and make sure it covers all the bases, like gingivitis prevention. Don’t forget to floss every day using traditional string floss, floss picks, or a water-jet flosser.

Don’t:

Undergo X-ray testing.

The FDA and the American Dental Association along with many other medical organizations, advise that the likelihood of oral X-rays harming your unborn child is extremely unlikely. However, unless absolutely necessary for monitoring a serious oral health issue like gum disease, it’s best to avoid these tests in case any rare adverse effects arise.

Ignore pain.

If you experience tooth or mouth pain, let your dentist know right away. Conditions like gum disease can severely impact your health, and can even lead to premature birth. They’ll need to be treated to ensure you and your unborn child stay healthy.
