All toothaches should be evaluated by a dentist as soon as possible. If it’s not an emergency, though, there are steps you can take to relieve pain and other issues until the day of your appointment. Here are a few effective ways to remain comfortable until your dentist can recommend an effective treatment solution, all of which involve household items or a quick trip to the neighborhood store.

Rinse With Saltwater

Saltwater helps disinfect your mouth thanks to its natural bacteria-fighting abilities. It’s also capable of reducing swelling, which in turn can decrease any discomfort you’re feeling. For the best results, mix half a teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water and swish around the affected tooth. Be sure to spit out the water once you’re done rinsing.

Take a Mild Pain Reliever

dentistMany over-the-counter pain relievers are effective in dealing with tooth pain. Be sure to take according to the instructions on the bottle and use caution if you have any health conditions that are affected by certain types of pain relievers. For instance, people with liver problems or allergies to acetaminophen should stay away from Tylenol®.

Use a Cold Compress

A cold compress applied to the outside of the cheek offers two benefits. First, it can numb any pain you’re experiencing due to the affected tooth. It can also bring down any swelling. This is especially helpful for toothaches caused by an injury or trauma to the mouth.

Try a Pain-Relieving Gel

Certain oral gels contain benzocaine, which has a numbing effect on the tooth and gums. This gel can be applied directly to the area for fast-acting relief to tide you over until your dentist appointment. Make sure you’re only using the recommended dose to prevent any complications from occurring.
