Heading out on the road during summer provides an adventure no matter where you begin or end. Happy memories are only possible if your vehicle is ready to literally go the distance, though which is where preparation and car maintenance come in. Use these tips to avoid getting stranded when you should be having an amazing time.

4 Pre-Trip Auto Maintenance Tasks

1. Schedule a Tuneup

Contact your local auto service shop to get your vehicle checked before you leave. Have all the fluids topped off and inspected for leaks, including the oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, and windshield wiper fluid, to prevent problems on the road. Your air conditioner, battery, and tires also need checking to ensure a comfortable ride. If your brakes haven’t been checked in a while, it’s wise to replace the pads as well.car maintenance

2. Create an Emergency Vehicle Kit

Put together a just-in-case car maintenance kit if you don’t already have one. The best kits typically include a spare tire, flares or reflective triangles, jumper cables, flashlight and extra batteries, rags, tarp, and duct tape. They also include a first aid kit, bottled water, and non-perishable food as well as seasonal items such as portable fans.

3. Clean the Headlights

Check for dimming or broken bulbs as well. If one of the bulbs is failing, the other will likely follow since they were installed by the manufacturer at the same time. Get both replaced to avoid safety issues from inconsistent brightness.

4. Avoid Overloading Your Car

Check your car’s weight capacity to avoid overloading the vehicle, especially if you keep a spare tire in your trunk. You don’t want to overwhelm your car with too much luggage because the extra weight creates drag and stresses your engine, resulting in frequent visits to the gas pump and premature engine wear.
