While not as fearsome as some other insects, the sheer number of ants that can belong to one colony makes them difficult to live with. If you notice some swarming a crumb on your kitchen floor or walking your windowsill, call pest control right away. Because of their minuscule size and similar features, identifying the type of species can be a little tricky. Here’s a closer look at some of the usual suspects.

What Are Some Common Ant Species?

1. Odorous House Ants

True to its name, this species gives off a rancid smell similar to blue cheese or rotten coconut when crushed. Each ant is dark brown or black and only about 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch long. They often nest in wall cracks and under floors during the rainy season, getting their sustenance from dead insects. They can also contaminate foods they come into contact with.

2. Rover Ants

Coming in at one-sixth of an inch, a rover ant comes in pale blonde to dark brown. It lives outdoors—along the grass edges and under objects on the ground—but comes inside to have a taste of sweet liquids like honey.

3. Crazy Ants

Earning the moniker for the erratic, jerky way it moves, the crazy ant can nest nearly anywhere, in both dry and moist environments. It does not sting or pose as a health threat, but can be a nuisance when it comes in hoards.

4. Fire Ants

pest controlSmall but terrible best describes this aggressive ant species. Sometimes as long as 3/8 inch, a fire ant has a light to dark reddish-brown color. It nests outdoors by forming mounds in hot, sunny areas, and moves indoors where it’s warm and moist. When disturbed, it retaliates with a painful sting that may result in a welt or white pustule. Call pest control to eradicate their presence.

5. Carpenter Ants

Contrary to its name, the carpenter ant isn’t there to build but to destroy. It comes larger than other species at 5/8 of an inch with a dark brown or reddish-black body. Like termites, it is a structural pest that tunnels through wood to build its nest. Opt for immediate pest control to avoid further damage.
