Driving around on old or damaged tires is not just dangerous, but it can also do serious damage to the rest of your car as well. Even if you don’t look at your tires every day, here are a few signs it’s time to make an appointment with a maintenance shop.

When Is It Time to Change Your Tires?

1. Worn-Off Tread

Bald tires are not just dangerous in the winter or rain. If there’s no tread on your tires, your car won’t perform well when going around corners or braking. Without that traction, you increase your risk of an accident. To test your tread depth, take a penny and stick it in between your tire treads face down. If Lincoln’s head is hidden completely, it’s time to get new tires.

2. Cracks in the Sidewall

Cracks or cuts in the sidewall of your tire can be normal wear and tear or a sign of worse damage. For instance, poor alignment on your vehicle may show in damage to your sidewall. It can also be a sign that your tire is slowly developing a leak, which can put you at risk of a blowout on the road later.

3. Shaking While Driving

tiresA bad or bumpy road will always cause some shaking to a car, but if it consistently shakes at 40 mph or above, it can mean one of your tires is unbalanced. It could be your alignment or shock absorbers, but it can also signal that there is serious damage to the interior of the tire itself.

4. Visible Bulges

As your tire ages, the outside wall of it can weaken and fail, leading to blowouts while driving. If you see any blisters or bulges growing on your tires, take them in to be looked at immediately. A weak spot in the tire can blow at any moment, so it’s important to change your tire right away before putting yourself and others at risk for an accident.
