When it’s time for your dental exam, twice a year, do you regard the appointment with the expectation of a glowing review? Unfortunately, your outlook on oral hygiene might not be as effective as you believe. Review the following list of misconceptions before your dentist visit, so you can ensure you’re doing everything to protect your smile.

3 Myths About Oral Hygiene

1. Gum Disease Isn’t Likely

If you think of periodontal disease as a hardship of few and far between, you are more vulnerable to this illness than you know. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly half (47%) of people over age 29 are in some stage of gum disease. As you get older, the risk of developing it increases. Therefore, it’s always important to keep an eye on the soft tissues in your mouth—by brushing, flossing, and getting regular dental exams.

2. Tooth Decay Is Mainly the Result of Excess Sugar

dental examEven if you’ve cut desserts out of your diet, you are still at risk of cavities and gum disease. In fact, whenever we eat carbohydrates, the food scraps combine with saliva and the naturally acidic bacteria in our mouths. This mixture causes plaque to accumulate around teeth, which may eventually result in decay. Keep in mind, carbohydrates include everything from toast to sweet potatoes, so it’s essential to brush after every meal or snack.

3. Harder Bristles Are Better at Cleaning Teeth

Remember, cleaning teeth is not like scouring grout lines—just because a harder brush may scrape away unwanted particles faster, it can also damage your teeth more quickly. A hard-bristled toothbrush will scrape away enamel, the protective outer layer of your teeth. The harsh scrubbing will leave your pearly whites more susceptible to staining and decay, as well as more sensitive to temperature and acidity.
