Dental fillings are very common, but many people don’t know the specifics about why they need them, how they work, or what their style options are. However, it’s important to be informed about any upcoming medical procedure, including dental procedures like fillings.

What Is a Dental Filling?

Dental fillings are used as a treatment for worn, broken, cracked, or cavity-infected teeth. When you’re getting a filling, your dentist will clean the affected area of your tooth, and will then place the filling inside the damaged areas. The filling will also be shaped to match your tooth. When it’s in place, the filling prevents your tooth from decaying further and allows it to function normally.

Why Do I Need a Filling?

Skipping a dental filling can lead to more serious health issues than a mere toothache. Untreated broken or cracked teeth can let bacteria slip into the tissue beneath the soft core of your tooth. This bacteria could eventually lead to a painful oral infection.

This would cause excruciating pain, making it difficult for you to sleep or eat. The infection can even result in flu-like symptoms. At that point, a root canal surgery may be required to fix your decayed tooth.

Cavities can also contribute to periodontitis, a gum disease that could cause you to lose your affected tooth. This would misalign your jaw and possibly introduce you to a host of other health problems, including digestive issues, sleep apnea, trouble speaking, and more. In other words, you need dental fillings to keep your entire body healthy.

What Are the Different Types of Fillings?

Many dental fillings are made from gold or silver, and both materials are strong enough to last at least 10 to 15 years. However, there’s also the option of composite resin fillings which are made from a mixture of glass and quartz. Though not as durable, these fillings chemically bond to your teeth and match their natural color. Lesser-used fillings include glass ionomer, which has the advantage of coating your tooth in fluoride but wears down easily, and ceramic or porcelain, which are rough but as tough as gold.
