Musical instruments are expensive, so you’ll want to keep them as safe as possible during a move. The packing and moving process can be hard on guitars, drum kits, and other delicate belongings. Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to prevent damage during transportation. To help you keep these items safe, here are a few tips for preparing them.

Packing Tips for Musical Instruments

1. Be Selective About BoxesPacking and Moving

When it comes to packing and moving musical instruments, not just any box will do. If you don’t have a case for your instrument, you’ll need a sturdy container that’s big enough for it, plus room for packing peanuts or other insulation necessary to keep your instrument from shifting. Talk to your local music store to see if they have extra boxes for your item or look for thicker shipping boxes. You can also buy a specialized case designed for your instrument.

2. Prepare the Instruments

Before you can place your instruments into boxes, you’ll need to get them ready. Loosen the strings on string instruments such as cellos, guitars, and violins. Turn all the head keys parallel to the headstock. Remove the mouthpieces of brass instruments and woodwinds and wrap them separately in bubble wrap before placing them in their boxes. Drums need to be disassembled into smaller pieces before being individually boxed for transport. Keep all accessories like straps and reeds packed separately to avoid scratching.

3. Moving & Storage

Your instruments should be transported lying horizontally with nothing stacked on top of them. This will ensure no damage is sustained from weight or falls. You’ll want them secured between other boxes in the moving van to keep them from rolling. If you aren’t taking them directly to your new home and they’ll be spending some time in storage first, make sure the unit is climate controlled, as most instruments are sensitive to heat and moisture.
