When you want to straighten your teeth into a beautiful and healthy smile, braces are a great solution. Having these metal brackets sitting permanently on your teeth can present some challenges with brushing, however. Know how to adapt your technique to avoid plaque buildup, discoloration, and cavities.

Common Braces Brushing Mistakes to Avoid

1. Not Targeting Brackets

Food builds up along the edges underneath each bracket on your teeth. Because this spot is hidden and difficult to reach, it’s easy to ignore. Focus on each area around your brackets as you brush by angling the head of the toothbrush at 45 degrees. Angle it downward to get the top of the bracket and upward to get the bottom, and brush with circular motions to dislodge any buildup.

2. Skipping Flossing

bracesThe wires running across your teeth make flossing difficult, so many people get frustrated and skip it. Flossing with braces can be easy, however, with the right tools. Purchase a water flosser so you can floss without getting the string caught in the wires. Another tool you can use is a floss threader to get the string between your teeth and underneath the wires with ease. Floss at least once a day.

3. Not Brushing Enough

Dentists recommend brushing twice a day – once in the morning and once in the evening. When you have braces, this becomes more important than ever due to the way food gets caught in them. Increase your brushing schedule to three times daily, after each meal. If you cannot brush after your lunch, rinse out your mouth with a mouthwash. This will help dislodge food particles and kill bacteria.
