The first sign of something wrong with your transmission may be obvious: droplets of red fluid on the ground beneath your car. The reason for the leak and how complicated the necessary transmission repair might be are sometimes less clear. Learn about some of the most common causes for a leak below.

5 Reasons Your Transmission May Be Leaking

1. Loose Pan Bolts or Plug

Since the transmission pan contains the fluid, a loose drain plug or bolt can lead to a leak. Leaks of this type sometimes occur after a fluid change. Fortunately, tightening the plug or bolt is quick and easy.

2. Damaged Transmission Pan

A bump or pothole may crack the pan, or rust and wear and tear over the years can make it susceptible to punctures. In these cases, your transmission repair may involve replacing the pan.

Transmission lines move fluid around for cooling and lubrication. The lines and their fittings are prone to damage from road hazards and wear. Replacing damaged lines is usually an easy fix that doesn’t require removing the transmission.

4. Leaking Torque Converter

The torque converter is the heart of your transmission working to pump fluid. When the converter develops cracks or needle bearings become damaged, you’ll start seeing fluid leak out below. Fixing the leak requires removal and replacement of the part, so this transmission repair can be more complicated and costly.

5. Broken Seals

Your transmission’s seals keep fluid contained and flowing, though they can get damaged because of impact or age. The location of the damaged seal determines how complicated the repair will be. Some seals are easier to access, while others require removing the transmission.
