Choosing a path after high school is a significant decision, and your child might feel overwhelmed by their list of college options. Take steps to narrow down their options now to make application season more manageable.

Applying to College? How to Narrow Down Choices

1. Think About Location

Though your teen will likely be spending most of their time on campus, they also want the surrounding area to support their lifestyle. For example, if they enjoy city life and spending the weekends exploring cultural activities, they might eliminate some of the colleges in rural areas. On the other hand, they might cross off city schools if they prefer to spend time in nature. Location can also shape internship options and job opportunities.

2. Cast a Wide Net

high schoolWhen making post-high school plans, it can be tricky to find one school that ticks off all of your child’s boxes. However, they’ll likely find several schools that fulfill most of their priorities, which is why it’s best to have options. Encourage your teen to select schools that offer diverse perks. For example, they might have a few on the list with the academic program they’re interested in pursuing and others in their ideal location. It can also be helpful to have a range of tuition prices in the mix since different schools will offer a variety of financial aid options.

3. Attend a College Fair

If your teen still has a wide pool of choices, attending a college fair can allow them to speak with admissions representatives in one afternoon. Use this opportunity to ask your most pertinent questions about programs, tuition, and campus life. This can help you weed out a few selections so you don’t have to waste time or money visiting quite as many campuses.

4. Go on One Last Visit

When doing initial college visits during high school, it’s easy for your teen to be enamored by each institution. However, another visit might clear up which is their favorite. If you’re able, schedule a second visit at a few of the top schools on their list. Meet with a professor in your child’s target program and talk to some students. This visit will either affirm that they’re going to apply or make them realize it’s not the right fit after all.
