Your dog’s health matters, but you might not always know what to do when it comes to their care. Luckily, if any issues arise, a little bloodwork can shed some light on the right direction to take. Here is some more information about what bloodwork can tell you about your dog.

What Types of Blood Tests Are Available?

The most common blood tests for dogs include a complete blood cell count (CBC), blood chemistry tests, heartworm tests, and thyroxine tests. CBC blood tests give your veterinarian the chance to check the number of red and white blood cells in your pet’s blood. This helps detect lingering infections, hydration problems, blood clotting issues, and parasitic conditions.

What Do These Tests Tell You?

bloodworkBlood chemistry tests can screen for a specific substance in your pet’s blood, such as high levels of sodium, calcium, chloride, potassium, or cholesterol. If high levels of certain substances are present, it could indicate a damaged organ or a problem with ongoing environmental exposure. Heartworm tests look for the presence of heartworms, while thyroxine tests are used to check your animal for abnormal thyroid function.

When Are Blood Tests Recommended?

Veterinarians recommend blood testing anytime your pet is sick and you aren’t sure why. Additionally, bloodwork may be ordered before a surgery, big trip, or a course of medication. If your animal is taking a medicine that has side effects, your vet may order bloodwork to monitor their condition along the way.
