A forklift requires as much finesse as a car to operate safely. Not only do drivers have to avoid running into the aisles or harming pedestrians, but they also have to balance heavy equipment or products between its two extended forks. If your business is expanding rapidly, with many new people learning to operate this piece of machinery, make sure they follow the forklift starter guidelines below.

How to Safely Drive a Forklift

1. Become Forklift Certified

The Occupational Safety and Health Act requires those who operate these vehicles to be forklift certified. There are generally two options for courses—in-person and online. While both are acceptable, the second option provides mostly conceptual, rather than real knowledge, of how to use a forklift. In either case, make sure to read the owner’s manual for the specific kind of equipment your business uses.

starter2. Distribute the Load Properly

Secure both forks fully under the load, using both rather than trying to lift it using only the tip of the machine. Most often, it’s best to use pallets and skids to distribute the weight evenly. Do not use a damaged pallet.

3. Ensure Clear Visibility

Only move the forklift when you can clearly see where you are going. Drive in reverse if it improves your visibility, but not when ascending or descending a ramp. Use a spotter to view your blinds spots if needed.

4. Avoid Hazards

If you see bumps or holes on pathways used by the forklift, alert management immediately, since it is unsafe to have to continuously navigate around them. Additionally, don’t drive your forklift over loose materials, such as wood chips, and reduce your speed with other slippery flooring. Always use the horn when going around corners where others may not see you coming.

5. Inspect the Equipment

The forklift should be examined before each use. Make sure all fluids are topped up and that the tires are not worn. When you turn the device on, listen for unusual noises and pay attention to burning smells. Confirm that the headlights turn on. Issues with any of these could mean there is a problem with the forklift starter. Lastly, test the horn, the brakes, and the lifting and tilting mechanisms to ensure they’re working properly.
