Your air conditioner plays a vital role in keeping you cool and comfortable all the way to fall. When it suddenly stops working, however, you may be torn as to whether to repair or replace it. In some instances, your HVAC contractor may recommend simple air conditioning repairs, but occasionally a complete replacement is the smarter solution. Here’s what you should know.

Repairing vs. Replacing the AC System

How Old Is the Air Conditioner?

The average air conditioner has a life expectancy of approximately 15 to 20 years. Once it reaches this point, it may experience more frequent problems. Even if it’s only occasionally that you need to call an HVAC contractor, however, it’s time to consider replacing the unit. If a serious problem occurs in the future, your provider may have a difficult time tracking down the right parts for a system that’s considerably older.

How Often Does It Require Work?

HVAC contractorThe more often you need to contact a residential HVAC service, the greater the likelihood that the system won’t make it to its estimated life span. Some problems are especially hard on the unit and may lead to inevitable replacement. A failed condenser, for example, affects the unit’s ability to condense gas into liquid form as it shifts to the evaporator. When it doesn’t work, the AC can’t cool the house effectively. Minor work, such as improper refrigerant levels or a blocked condenser unit, is not likely to affect the life of the system so long as it’s handled promptly.

Does It Still Perform Efficiently?

If you haven’t replaced your air conditioner in over a decade, your energy bills may be higher than necessary. Check your system’s seasonal energy efficiency rating, known as SEER—it should be at least 13 or higher. The greater this figure, the more efficient your system. The newest models feature improved SEER ratings. If the unit’s relatively new and seems sluggish, however, your HVAC contractor may choose to repair it instead. Sometimes the solution is as simple as replacing the air filter.
