A clogged drain can seem like an emergency, especially if you haven’t previously had to deal with one. While you’re waiting for your plumber to arrive, there are some things you can do to clear the drain quickly. Reviewing these do’s and don’ts can also help you avoid future blocked drains.

Do:

Run cold water while the garbage disposal is running.

If your sink is equipped with a garbage disposal, you should always run the cold water while running the unit. This will help carry food debris through the system rather than letting it sit in the pipes, where it will potentially create a blockage.

Snake the drain.

If you have a drain snake, you may want to snake your drain to clear the clog. Otherwise, your plumber will likely do this when they arrive as it can be the most efficient way of removing a simple blockage. Snaking the drain involves running a metal hose or coil down your drain to push debris through the pipes.

Use a sink plunger.

A sink plunger operates best in water, so be sure you have enough in the sink or tub to cover about half of the rubber portion of the plunger. As you push and pull on the handle, the plunger may generate enough suction to work the blockage loose. This is often enough to unclog the drain.

Don’t:

Add water to a clogged drain.Plumber

Likely, you didn’t notice the drain was clogged until water began backing up. This is more than enough water to use a plunger, so resist adding more. Before you, or a plumber, can try to clear the drain, the extra water must be removed.

Use corrosive cleaners.

Corrosive drain cleaners work quickly in many situations, but most people don’t realize the damage they can cause in the process. For instance, newer homes have PVC piping, which corrosive agents destroy or weaken. Older metal pipes can also be damaged by the caustic substances in some drain cleaners. Additionally, the chemicals can burn your skin or eyes.

Be afraid to call a professional.

People resist calling a plumber for one of two reasons: Either they imagine it will result in a high bill or believe the clogged drain is a simple fix they should take care of themselves. Many plumbers will work within your budget and discuss their costs ahead of time. Also, whether the blockage is simple or complicated, your plumber will be happy to take care of it for you.
