Embroidered custom T-shirts are popular promotional items for your business at conventions, events, or trade-shows and work as sharp uniforms. Make yours stand out with the following embroidery design tips.

How to Design Embroidery for Custom T-shirts

1. Keep It Simple

Embroidery doesn’t produce the same results as screen printing, which can apply fine lines and complex designs to a shirt. Embroidery is thicker and works better with simple shapes and designs, although it can be used for lettering. Embroidery also can’t duplicate the shading effect of ink, so have a graphic designer refashion your logo to reflect simple shapes and colors. Avoid fine lines, intricate lettering, and layers of detail.

2. Keep It Small

custom-t-shirtOversized logos or images will look bulky in embroidery, especially when completely filled in with thread. They’ll also look out of proportion on most garments. Exceptions include team jerseys, other sports-related merchandise, and military apparel. For best results and maximum wearability, keep embroidery designs for T-shirts to three or 3.5 inches.

3. Choose Placement Carefully

Embroidered designs on custom T-shirts work best on the upper left or right chest area since they’re clearly visible and prominent. For a subtler look, place the logo on a sleeve or the center of the upper back near the collar. Also, consider who will be wearing the shirt and when. If employees will wear them at work-related functions, a tasteful and small design is best, but to advertise your brand, go with front chest embroidery.
