While looking forward to end-of-summer travels, you might not be quite as excited about the plane ride. Long flights mean neck and back pain for many passengers, starting your vacation on an uncomfortable note. Luckily, there are some steps you can take to avoid this pain during your next trip. Use the following tips to prioritize your comfort on a plane.

Do:

Bring a support pillow.

Airplane seats have little support, which can make sleeping uncomfortable during long flights. A neck pillow supports the neck and keeps your head from flopping to the side. Also, bring a small pillow to keep behind your lower back during the flight. Rather than feeling stiff and sore when you land, you can enjoy complete comfort.

Watch your posture.

It can be tempting to slouch back while watching movies or lean forward while reading. However, these positions put pressure on your spine and cause back pain. Sit up straight whenever possible to keep your spine in alignment.

Stay stationary.

Many passengers will experience neck and back pain simply from sitting too long. This is similar to the stiffness you might experience while sitting at a desk during work. Stand up periodically to stretch and loosen your muscles, and consider booking flight patterns with more layovers to give you more chances to move around.

Forget to see your chiropractor.

If you know you will be taking a long flight, book an appointment with your chiropractor before and after vacation. This way, your spine can be in top shape before the trip, and the chiropractor can realign your back when you return home. They can also give you extra tips to avoid back pain while traveling.
