Whether you're changing apartments or moving to a new house, you’ll need plenty of boxes to transport your belongings. However, the number of boxes required will vary depending on how much you own. The following guide will help you determine how many boxes to get for your move.

How Many Rooms Do You Have in Your Home?

The number of rooms in your home will give you a starting idea of how many boxes you’ll need. For example, a one-bedroom apartment typically uses 20 medium and 15 large boxes along with assorted other sizes. A three-bedroom home can use as many as 45 medium boxes and 30 large boxes. A good rule of thumb is to get five large boxes, eight medium boxes, and 10 small boxes per room.

Are You Interested in Downsizing?

movingMany people look at moving as an opportunity to declutter their homes. If you fall into this category, you can save money on boxes and time on packing. Decluttering can also earn you a bit of cash if you have a yard sale or sell items to secondhand stores. You can donate gently used items as well. Once you’ve cleared out your home, reassess your belongings to determine how many boxes are appropriate.

Do You Need Specialty Boxes?

Along with small, medium, and large boxes, you may need specialty boxes for certain items. Dish barrel boxes are reinforced with added cushioning to protect fragile items. If you have expensive clothing, set them up in wardrobe boxes. There are also specially designed boxes for books, mirrors, and framed items.
