If you’ve ever sneezed or coughed when you aren’t sick, then it’s time to check your air filter. And your filter affects you financially, too. Because dirty air filters also degrade the performance of your HVAC system. If you have a washable air filter, follow the guide below for cleaning instructions.

Know Your Screen’s Style

Your reusable filter can be cleaned every four to five years, compared to traditional types that you should change every three to four months. And how do you know whether yours is reusable? If you don’t remember from purchase, look up the model number from the frame. Also, plastic sides and entirely metal filters usually mean it’s reusable. If it’s disposable, the sides may be paper-based.

How to Clean Reusable Air Filters

1. Remove

HVAC system

Commence cleaning the reusable filter by turning off your HVAC system. It’s dangerous to remove the filter while it’s still running. There should be a typical power switch near your furnace. If you can’t locate that, go to your home’s main circuit breaker box and switch the one labeled “HVAC” to the off position.

Next, remove the filter in your air vent or furnace area. When you remove the screen, it’s helpful to use a marker to note the direction of the airflow for reinsertion later.

2. Vacuum & Rinse

Vacuums with HEPA systems minimize allergens when cleaning. Make sure your vacuum has an attachment. Extend your attachment down the filter’s slot for stray dust, then suction debris from the front and back of your reusable screen.

Then, with a mild detergent, gently wipe contaminants from both sides of the screen. After removing the particles, take the screen outside and use a hose to rinse off any leftover dirt. Ensure the darker side of your filter is facedown, so you don’t force small particles into the filter.

3. Insert

Wait until the filter is completely dry before replacing it. Use a paper towel to speed up the drying process for metal ones. Look for the direction of the airflow and insert the filter into the slot. Once its properly in place, you can turn your HVAC system back on.
