Keeping a clean gym for everyone is part of workout etiquette. Most gyms feature stations with products to wipe down machines. You may be wondering if you should do this before or after working out. If you don’t want to create problems for others, use the following guide to assist.

The Importance of Wiping Down Gym Equipment

When to Do It

gymPeople sweat. It’s simply a part of working out. If you’re preparing to use a piece of equipment after someone else and notice sweat marks, wipe down the equipment. You should also do the same when you’re finished. Even if you don’t sweat, it’s the polite act to do. You’ll ensure you aren’t spreading bacteria or creating unnecessary work for the gym staff or other people working out. You also want to keep your gym looking great. If the staff is showing the facilities to prospective members, it can be off-putting to see a pile of sweat on a machine.

How to Clean

Your gym will likely have a cleaning station with paper towels, sanitizing spray, or disinfecting wipes. Grab these when you’re finished and wipe all surfaces of machine seats or the handles on dumbells and other equipment. This will clear any germs or debris left behind. If you wipe it down before using it, let it fully dry. When you’re finished, throw everything away. Stick to the same practices at your next station. You’ll be setting a great example and encourage other gym members to do the same. If you take a fitness class, speak with the instructor about how they’d like you to clean any equipment.
