1. Conserve Water

Limit your water use as much as possible to avoid overwhelming the septic tank. Stagger shower times, run your laundry throughout the week rather than all at once, and install water-saving fixtures if you do not already have them.

2. Mark the Tank Area

As you work on your property or have visitors parking on it, take care that they do not drive over the septic tank. Compacting the soil over the drain field or the tank will damage the system. Mark it off with tape or post signs to keep large vehicles away from this area.

3. Pump the Tank

After a season of high use, it’s likely time to schedule tank cleaning. Check when your last septic pumping was; if it has been three years or more, than it’s time to schedule another appointment.

4. Plant Carefully
