Each season brings with it a new set of responsibilities in caring for your septic system. While you enjoy the long days and warm weather of this summer, keep your system in mind. Some simple maintenance will go a long way in keeping it functioning properly.

Septic System Checklist for Summer

1. Conserve Water

Water usage tends to rise during the summer season. Your family spends more time outdoors getting dirty and you may have house guests, which translates to running more loads of laundry and taking more showers or baths. Limit your water use as much as possible to avoid overwhelming the septic tank. Stagger shower times, run your laundry throughout the week rather than all at once, and install water-saving fixtures if you do not already have them.

2. Mark the Tank Area

3. Pump the Tank

After a season of high use, it’s likely time to schedule tank cleaning. Check when your last septic pumping was; if it has been three years or more, than it’s time to schedule another appointment.

4. Plant Carefully

Plants with deep roots can damage your tank or plumbing. If you are adding in some new landscaping, pay attention to where your system is located. Drain fields and tanks should have nothing other than grass planted over them for ideal function. Plant deep-rooted plants such as trees and shrubs at least 30 feet away from the system.
