If you’re going on vacation and plan to board your dog, make sure they’re ready for interaction with other animals. Most dog kennels require a history of your pet’s medical records to ensure they’re protected from social diseases and won’t spread illnesses to other boarders. Before dropping off your four-legged friend at the kennel, make sure they’re protected from these common conditions.

The Most-Contagious Canine Diseases

1. Parvovirus

This disease can be found in unvaccinated dogs or puppies who are less than four months old. Parvo is highly contagious, spreads quickly through dog-to-dog contact, and can be fatal if left untreated. Canines with this condition will typically exhibit lethargy, a loss of appetite, abdominal pain, bloating, fever, vomiting, or severe diarrhea. If your dog has been vaccinated, getting a booster shot will keep them safe during their stay at a dog kennel.

2. Kennel Cough

dog kennelThis is a loose term that can describe a wide range of respiratory infections and is similar to a human chest cold. A dog can get a viral or bacterial infection in their voice box or windpipe if they’re in an area with poor air circulation. Since it’s airborne, this illness typically occurs where there are many canines, like at the groomers or a puppy training class. Dogs with this condition have a dry, persistent cough or occasionally cough up white phlegm.

3. Distemper

Dogs with this illness may have an upset stomach and respiratory issues. Distemper is spread through bodily secretions and will eventually lead to neurological problems, causing seizures. Fortunately, it’s one of the first vaccines that your dog receives as a puppy, and your veterinarian will usually recommend it every three years.
