Bringing a new family member home changes your life in many ways. While the changes for your HVAC system may not be the most obvious, they are important. Keep your indoor air quality and system efficiency high by knowing how to adapt your maintenance plan to your pet.

The Impact of a Pet on Heating & Cooling Systems

1. Clogged Air Filters

Pet fur, dander, and dirt tracked indoors all get into your system, where they are caught by your air filter. This clogs your filter up more quickly than it did before you brought home your pet, making the system less efficient. Start changing your air filter once every four weeks to compensate. If it seems clogged when you change it, you may even want to shorten your schedule to every three weeks. For example, some homeowners change their filter more often during the spring while their dog is shedding their winter coat.

2. Reduced Indoor Air Quality

This reduces indoor air quality, which can be especially problematic for young children, seniors, and people with asthma or other respiratory problems. Vacuum and sweep often, giving special attention to the areas around your vents.

3. Dirty Ductwork

Even though your air filter catches most of the allergens, some will slip through and get trapped inside the ducts. This reduces air quality and efficiency as it minimizes airflow through the ducts. Have your air ducts professionally cleaned once every three or four years to remove that buildup.
