The role of braces is to slowly move teeth into better alignment. That’s why, after getting them placed, yours may feel slightly strange or sore. However, that sensation should go away within a few days. Once the teeth have fully adjusted to their new position, your orthodontist will then schedule an appointment to tighten them to shift them a little further. This process will repeat until your smile is what you were hoping for. But if you are new to braces, you might be curious about what the tightening process involves. The guide below explains.

Why Do Braces Need Tightening?

Traditional braces help align and straighten your teeth via wires connected to brackets cemented to your teeth. The wires put pressure on the teeth to move them into the desired position. However, as your teeth begin to shift, the wires don't exert as much pressure and need to be tightened if they are going to keep working. This typically means a visit to the orthodontist every 4-6 weeks to adjust the wires and ensure everything is progressing as it should. The tightening process may also include other changes, such as utilizing rubber bands to help correct bite problems.

What Does the Process Involve?

orthodontistBraces tightening begins with an exam to make sure your teeth are doing well and moving in the expected direction. Next, the orthodontist will remove the rubber bands that hold the wire to your teeth and the wire itself. Depending on how your teeth are progressing, the wire may be replaced, or it may be reused and simply adjusted. Once the wire is put back into the brackets into the new position, new rubber bands are added to hold it there.

Taking Care of Your Teeth After Tightening

Following this, you may feel discomfort for a few days. For most people, the pain goes away in 24-48 hours and the more often you have your braces tightened, the less painful it gets. Your provider may recommend taking some ibuprofen or acetaminophen for relief or using cold therapy in the form of ice packs. You might also want to prioritize soft foods during this time. If the pain lasts longer than a few days or is severe, call the orthodontist right away.
