Whether it’s wine glasses you picked out for your registry or China you inherited from a favorite relative, you need to take extra care when packing glassware and dishes for the movers. These are extremely fragile, and the last thing you want to do after you get to the new home is to replace these items. To save time and money, follow some basic moving tips to ensure your belongings don’t break in transit.

How to Pack Glassware & Dishes for Moving

1. Use Sturdy Boxes

Make sure your boxes and packing tape are thick and are made for the specific purposes of moving. Thin boxes with skimpy tape on the bottom will come apart, and the contents will fall when your local residential movers come to get your goods.

2. Get Packing Materials

moversBubble wrap, newsprint paper, towels, and foam peanuts are perfect for protecting your wine glasses, plates, coffee mugs, and bowls. They cover, cushion, and separate your goods, so they don’t hit against one another or get scratches.

3. Measure the Weight

Place heavy items at the bottom of a box and lighter items on top. Pack extremely fragile stemware, such as wine glasses, in their own box to avoid damage. Try to keep dishes together and glasses separate. Don’t use overly large boxes to place fragile items. Medium and small ones are best, so the contents don’t shift around.

4. Wrap Items Carefully

Wrap no more than a stack of four plates or bowls together with bubble wrap or paper. Then, add a few pieces of packing tape around the group. Add several layers of bubble wrap or thick paper (or towels) on the bottom of your box and place your dishes on their side. Avoid laying your dishes down flat in your box, as their sides are stronger.

5. Provide Cushions

Wrap glasses and cups individually with paper or bubble wrap if they are crystal or long-stemmed. You can save some time and packing materials by stacking two cups together that easily nest into one another if they are not likely to break easily. Add plenty of paper in between cups and glasses to create cushioning.
