While often taken for granted, modern plumbing makes so many of the tasks we need to complete during the day easier and more sanitary. And yet, as we age, using the restroom or taking a shower start to become more difficult even with these conveniences. If you’re hoping to make your bathroom safer for yourself or an elderly loved one, use the following guide to your advantage.

How to Create a More Senior-Friendly Bathroom

1. Convert the Tub

The standard shower and tub combination that comes installed in most homes can be uncomfortable, if not dangerous, for seniors to use. To eliminate the risk of a slip and fall, or a pulled muscle while attempting to climb in, replace it with a curbless shower. This allows bathers to walk directly in while maintaining drainage due to a slight slope. Or, if you prefer sitting down when bathing, install a walk-in bathtub, which features a watertight door for easy entry and exit.

2. Grab Bars & Rails

plumbingBathrooms tend to have tile floors because they are moisture-resistant. However, they can also become slippery easily. To prevent the risk of injury, install grab bars or railings on either side of the toilet, as well as inside and outside of the shower or bath. This way, you or your loved one can feel more secure changing positions and still have privacy in the bathroom.

3. Higher Toilets

If you or a relative are dealing with joint pain, especially in the knees and hips, sitting down to use the bathroom can be painful and frightening. By installing a higher toilet, you won’t have to bend down as much to reach the seat or exert as much force to stand up again. This is an excellent plumbing improvement if you don’t have room for grab bars or simply don’t like the look of them.
