Water is essential to dental health. It is a primary source of fluoride, which strengthens teeth and serves as a natural cavity fighter; it also washes plaque and food particles from the teeth and gums and helps prevent dry mouth by encouraging saliva production. Despite its numerous benefits, however, water isn't the most appealing beverage choice for many kids. Here are a few ways of encouraging your child to drink more water.

How to Get a Child to Drink More Water

1. Add Some Fruit

Kids tend to find water bland and unexciting. Compared to juice and soda, there just isn't as much flavor. However, you can give your child's water a pop of sweetness by adding a slice or two of fresh fruit. Dental professionals recommend choosing fruits that are lower in sugar, like strawberries, kiwis, and lemons; avoid high-sugar fruits such as grapes, cherries, and mangoes.

2. Make It Fun

dentalAnother way to make water-drinking exciting is to get creative with how it's served. Use a sippy cup decorated with your child's favorite animated character. Purchase reusable straws in bright colors or crazy shapes. Make these items special, too. Inform your child that this is their special water cup or straw and can only be used to drink water. This makes the experience more distinctive and unique in the child's mind, and they'll be more apt to want to take part.

3. Be an Example

Kids don't just pick up on what adults say, but they pick up on what adults do. Ultimately, your child is learning from the unspoken behaviors and habits you practice in daily life. If you don't drink much water, up your own intake, so the child sees that their parent is a devoted water-drinker. There's no need to call overt attention to it, but make it a point to drink more water in their presence. You might be surprised to find them increasing their own water consumption as a result.
