Health issues are scary, especially those that come on suddenly with severe symptoms and significant distress. But it is often difficult to determine which health challenges require an emergency room visit, which require a trip to Urgent Care, and which can wait for an appointment with a primary care physician. Common scenarios treated in each setting are discussed in more detail below.

Emergency Room

An emergency room should be utilized only for life or death situations and for those issues that have the potential to be life-threatening. An emergency department will provide on-the-spot, life-saving diagnoses and treatments. Additionally, they have access to comprehensive imaging and laboratory services that an Urgent Care and primary care doctors typically do not. Among the ailments best suited to an emergency room: chest pain; trauma to the head, neck, or spine; broken bones that break the skin; vision disturbances accompanied by loss of balance or confusion; wounds that won't stop bleeding; severe abdominal pain; and high fever in babies.

Urgent Care

An Urgent Care addresses acute urgent careillnesses and injuries that are not life-threatening. This office is an excellent option if you cannot get in to see your primary care physician right away or if it is after regular operating hours. While it doesn't have the range of medical equipment you'd find at an emergency room, they have the resources to provide comprehensive care efficiently. Go to an Urgent Care for fever; vomiting; flu-like symptoms; sore throat; bone fractures that haven't broken the skin; muscle sprains; nosebleeds; minor cuts; mild infections; and animal bites.

Primary Care Doctor

Schedule an appointment with your primary care doctor for any medical problems that do not require immediate attention. These are often health concerns that are somewhat manageable at home, such as a cold, mild headache, upset stomach, or muscle strains. If the doctor feels you require more intensive or more acute care, they will refer you to a specialist or an emergency room.
