As the temperatures rise during the summer, veterinarians warn that pets can experience heatstroke if they become overheated. Heatstroke can lead to organ failure and possibly death. To ensure your pet stays comfortable and cool during the hot days, below is a guide to the symptoms of heatstroke and some tips to prevent it.

The Signs of Heatstroke

Inadequate shade, excessive exercise, a lack of water, and a warm or humid environment with poor ventilation are all factors that lead to heatstroke in pets. Common symptoms include panting, increased heart rate, confusion, dizziness, excessive drooling or salivating, and muscle tremors. The signs increase in severity if they stay in the heat and don’t receive treatment. If you don’t address the issue right away, it could become fatal.

How to Prevent Heatstroke in Your Pet

veterinarianWhile we can shed layers of clothing as the temperature increases, your dog or cat has fur that they can’t take off. By panting, dogs circulate air through their bodies, which cools them down. They can also lower their temperature by swimming or drinking in water. If you see your dog panting excessively in the heat, move them indoors to a cool area and give them water. You can also soak them in cool water, but make sure it’s not ice-cold, as this could make the symptoms worse. Contact your veterinarian if the symptoms don’t subside.

Make sure you have a cool, well-ventilated area for pets with clean drinking water at all times. Don’t ever leave your pet in the car; temperatures rise very quickly even on milder days and can be fatal. For hot days, take your dog out in the early morning and later in the evening when it’s cooler out. Avoid going for a walk during the day when the temperature is at its highest. Also, don’t tie your pet outside for extended periods during hot days, especially if there isn’t any access to shade.
