Vinyl siding is exposed to the elements, and as a result, it takes the brunt of any poor weather, insects looking for a safe place to stay, and angry birds. Luckily, it’s easy to care for, and it doesn’t require much maintenance. Here are a few tips to help keep your siding looking like new for years to come.

3 Tips for Maintaining Vinyl Siding

1. Limit Damage From Outside Sources

Heavy winds can loosen siding, so go outside and walk around your home after a storm. Pull softly on its corners, looking for misaligned vinyl sheets to see if there is any damage. Trees and brushes can puncture siding, so trim their branches far enough back to where the limbs cannot reach the siding even during heavy winds.

2. Protect It From Mold

Vinyl SidingMold requires shade and moisture to thrive. Tall trees or bushes close to the house will cast a shadow on your home. Any prolonged period of moisture can cause mold to form. Leaky or broken gutters are major sources for mold. A continuous stream of gutter water that carries debris will cause mold streaks down your siding as well.

3. Wash the Siding Once a Year

Clean siding with warm water and a soft cloth or soft-bristled brush, working from the ground up to prevent streaks from forming. Many manufacturers do not recommend using pressure washers to clean vinyl siding, but you can as long as you take certain precautions. Place the pressure washer on the lowest setting and keep the spray even at eye level at all times. Spraying upward can cause water to go under the siding and moisten the padding and wood underneath. This can cause mold or rot, and it will attract insects.
