If you drive a stick shift, you need to put extra care into your vehicle to keep your manual transmission in good shape. Fortunately, following some essential maintenance tips and driving techniques will help you avoid an early trip to the auto mechanic. These are five of the most important tips to keep in mind.

5 Tips to Help Your Manual Transmission Last

1. Don't Ride the Clutch

Driving a vehicle with a manual transmission takes a little work. Be sure to lift your foot completely off the clutch each time you shift gears. If you ride the clutch, it puts strain on the transmission and the gearbox, causing damage and more trips to the auto mechanic in the long run.

2. Stop Downshifting

auto-mechanicWhen you need to slow down and stop, don’t downshift. Doing this is bad for your transmission and your engine. Your brakes should be used when you need to slow down, not your stick. Some people downshift in an attempt to reduce wear and tear on the brakes, but replacing brake pads is much cheaper than overhauling your transmission.

3. Be Wary About Letting Others Drive

You might know how to drive a stick properly, but less than 5% of all vehicles sold in the U.S. have a manual transmission these days. Therefore there are not a lot of knowledgeable, experienced drivers on the road when it comes to driving stick. Only let someone else drive your vehicle if you’re confident they know what they’re doing.

4. Get Annual Inspections

Even if you aren't having any issues with your manual transmission, you should make an appointment with your auto mechanic annually to have your transmission inspected for leaks and other concerns. In addition, follow your owner's manual or a reputable mechanic's advice on how often to get your transmission fluid flushed and filters replaced. Typically, this is between every 30,000 and 60,000 miles.

5. Handle Issues Quickly

If you hear grinding sounds when you shift gears or smell an unusual odor, call your auto mechanic as soon as possible. Promptly addressing the early signs of a transmission issue can save you time and money on more costly repairs.
