Do:

Follow the basics.

Business cards should adhere to the fundamentals of design. Align the most important elements with one another, and leave enough negative space so that the card doesn’t look busy. Give weight to the most important features, such as your business name or logo. Ensure easy reading by increasing the contrast of the text and the background

Use special finishes.

Foiling, for instance, gives your cards a shiny metallic flare, while spot ultraviolet treatment makes the colors more vibrant. Letterpress printing and embossing will add texture. 

Don’t:

Overdo it.

While special finishes can certainly make your cards stand out, try not to go overboard with them. You don’t want foiling or embossing to make the text difficult to read, for instance. If you use special finishes, make sure they enhance the design—without overwhelming its message. 

Forget to check printer requirements.

Good design doesn’t mean much if it does not meet your printer’s requirements, so double-check the margins, dimensions, and file type. Err on the side of caution by leaving a 3 millimeter bleed around the edges, so that your text doesn’t get cropped too short.
