Although moving can be stressful, many people fall victim to common relocation errors that make the process even more taxing. With proper planning, move-out day will be much easier for everyone involved. To prepare, below are some mistakes to dodge.

7 Moving Mistakes People Make the Most

1. Buying Expensive Supplies

From reams of bubble wrap to various-size boxes, you might have a long list of packing materials to pick up at the store. Costs will add up quickly, which is why you should first see what boxes and storage containers you already have. You can wrap fragile items in clothing and towels to save money too.

2. Packing Dangerous Substances

Paint thinner, gasoline, and other flammable, explosive, and corrosive materials should never be packed and put on the moving truck. The items could burn or explode if an ignition source is nearby. Contact your local health department or environmental protection agency for guidelines on how to safely transport these goods.

3. Forgetting to Label Boxes

With a permanent marker, write down the room where each box belongs. Indicate whether boxes are particularly heavy or contain fragile items too.

4. Miscalculating How Long It Takes to Pack

Failing to realize the scope of the project leads many people to wait until the last minute to pack, which is often the largest source of stress. Try to give yourself a few weeks or months to gradually pack each room.

5. Taking Everything

You likely have items tucked away in closets and boxes you haven’t used or thought about in years. Chances are you won’t use these items in the future, so don’t take them with you. Donating unwanted items to charity will help you save time packing and prevent clutter in your new space.

6. Neglecting to Pack Valuables Carefully

Anything you’d put in a safe shouldn’t go in moving boxes. Fine jewelry, insurance policies, and other valuable items could easily get lost in the shuffle. To keep them safe, carry them with you to the new house.

7. Scheduling Moving Services on Busy Dates

Professional movers’ schedules fill up quickly on certain dates, including weekends and the end of each month. Keep this in mind when scheduling your move. To get an available slot, relocate during the middle of the week between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.
