Whether you’ve just moved out of your parent’s house or have been sharing a space with roommates, getting your own apartment can be an exciting experience. Taking time to explore the neighborhood and unpack will make the adjustment easier, but there are additional steps you can take to make the space feel more like home. Here are three ways to settle into your new apartment as quickly as possible.

How to Make a New Apartment Feel Like Home

1. Hang Wall Art

Bare walls can make an apartment feel cold and isolated, so make sure to unpack boxes with framed photos and artwork first. Hang larger pieces on walls in the living room and bedroom. Looking at the photos and artwork will bring back fond memories and help personalize the new setting.

2. Incorporate Color

apartmentIn addition to hanging wall art, consider splashing one or two walls in a new hue. To unify the space, choose a color found in the furniture, bedding, or throw pillow patterns to create an accent wall. Make sure to check your lease agreement before getting started to make sure you’re allowed to make changes to the apartment’s surfaces. If painting isn’t an option, you can still add splashes of color by placing decorations such as houseplants and flowers on windowsills.

3. Find Spots for Essentials

When you move in, think about your daily routine when arranging furniture. You’ll start to feel comfortable when everything is easy to access. For example, put a small table or shelf near the front door. In addition to books and keepsakes, the furniture can hold keys, sunglasses, and anything else you’ll need to grab before you leave. If you ride a bike, you can place hooks on the walls to hang your bike and keep it out of the way while providing convenient access.
