When your child is very young, it can be difficult to imagine leaving them in someone else’s care. However, at some point, this separation will be a necessary part of their growth and development. If you want to enroll your little one in preschool but are nervous about how you both will deal with the transition, here are some tips to help.

3 Tips for Coping With Preschool Separation Anxiety

1. Instill Enthusiasm in Your Child

A few weeks before they start preschool, start talking to your child about what they can expect. Bring up the fun activities they’ll get to do. Take your child to shop for their school supplies, and let them choose a backpack or outfit they’ll be excited to show off. Visit the classroom at least once or twice before classes start. By showing your child the toys, books, decor, and general atmosphere, they will be more excited to spend their time in this new environment.

2. Remember the Benefits

preschoolIf you’re anxious about sending your child to preschool, they might be able to pick up on your feelings. Show them there’s nothing to feel uneasy about by focusing on the benefits of your little one’s attendance. They’ll need this time away from you to develop a sense of self, and to learn how to exercise the skills and moral compass you’ve instilled in them. Plus, a teacher can devote the entire day to enlightening your little one, whereas you might have to juggle work and household responsibilities with their at-home education.

3. Establish a Support System

If the teacher provides a list of contacts for the class, reach out to some of the other parents and ask if they’d like to arrange a play date. Not only will you feel more comfortable having other parents to discuss this transition with, but your child will get a head-start on adapting to their new social circle. When they head to preschool on the first day, they’ll feel comfortable knowing they’re not alone—they already know some other children in the classroom.
