When it comes to renting, it can seem impossible to get your security deposit back. However, unless you’ve had significant issues, it shouldn’t be out of your reach with some preparation and diligence. Before you schedule the movers, here’s what you can do to get your money back.

How to Ensure Your Security Deposit is Returned

1. Review the Lease

moversThe lease tells you everything you need to know about what’s expected of your tenancy as well as the terms and conditions for getting the security deposit refunded. Go through it with a fine-tooth comb and review it again before booking the movers. For example, if you’re allowed to paint the walls, but the lease has a stipulation that you must return them to their original color, you should keep that in mind, or you could lose your deposit.

2. Document the Initial State

When you first move into an apartment, photograph as much of the place as possible, especially any kind of damage, like scuff marks or holes. If you can, make a video as well — having both is even better. Email these to your landlord the same day so that there’s a record; you shouldn’t be held accountable for what was already there.

3. Deep Clean

Even if you’re tidy and clean your apartment frequently, in the weeks leading up to the move, begin a deep clean throughout the entire place. Don’t assume you can get this all done after the movers arrive; get a headstart, going top to bottom and through every nook and cranny. If you took photos of the entire space the day you moved in, use them as a reference.
