If your foundation is settling, cracked, or uneven, it is a sign of structural issues that require immediate attention from a professional contractor. When it comes to your home’s foundation, you want a custom-tailored solution that directly addresses the specific needs of your home. Choose a service that specializes in foundation repair and understands the use of helical piers to make sure the job is done safely and correctly.

What Is a Helical Pier?

Helical pier systems are comprised of steel piers that are driven into the soil and attached to the foundation footing via a steel bracket. The process can lift the home to its original position and is typically not visible above ground. Most systems use galvanized steel that is corrosion-resistant and will not warp.

How Are They Installed?

1. Prepare the Foundation

foundation-repairThe first step will be to prepare the foundation by excavating the soil around it to expose the footing. If the installation is taking place inside, contractors will remove a portion of the slab to access the footing. Usually, the slab can be restored after the piers are in place. Part of the footing will be cut away to allow the bracket and pier to support the wall directly.

2. Install the Piers & Brackets

After prepping the foundation and footing, the helical piers are installed by mechanically driving them into the ground until an appropriate depth is reached. The steel piers are installed at a depth that allows them to rest in stable soil or rock. Steel brackets are then attached to the piers and subsequently, the footing.

3. Lift the Foundation

Once the pier system is in place, the contractors will lift the foundation back to its original position if this is a safe an appropriate solution. This can result in “automatic” foundation repair of cracks and uneven doors and windows. Regardless of whether the foundation can be lifted, the helical pier system is a permanent solution to settling.
