From homes to businesses, mortar sand and ready-mix concrete are two of the most common building supplies used. However, they're often confused for one another. While both materials have some base similarities, their qualities and purpose are vastly different. Here is a closer look at each.

Mortar

mortar sandThe primary ingredients in mortar are cement and sand. Once mixed with water, mortar sand creates a thick paste, which is especially useful for bonding other building materials. Even though its purpose is straightforward, the material is applied in a variety of situations, so there are multiple types of mixes available.

While it works as an excellent glue, the mix's lifespan is only around 25 to 50 years. It also isn't as sturdy as other cement-based products. For those reasons, it's not utilized as a primary building material, and instead, serves as a connector for bricks, stones, and concrete blocks.

Concrete

Concrete, like mortar, contains a cement and sand base, but the mix goes a step further by adding other aggregates, like gravel. The slight variation in the formula creates an incredibly durable material that works well on its own as well as combined with other materials. For that reason, its commonly used for foundations, patios, and sidewalks.

The high amount of water required for ready-mix concrete prevents it from use in bonding. However, it does allow you to form the material in a variety of shapes and styles. Regardless of the finished design, a frame is required to hold the shape until it sets.
